Artist Kim Namyong has narrowed the gap between 'what is seen and what appears to be' by placing two-dimensional representations and three-dimensional realities within a single space, thereby challenging the viewer's fixed preconceptions. This invitational solo exhibition, Constructed Illusion, goes beyond utilizing visual trickery and spatial distortion as mere technical representation. Instead, it serves as an experimental space for philosophical reflection on the 'act of seeing' and redefines painting as a medium that exposes the structure of perception.
This precise illusion is rendered through detailed depictions upon a birch panel, where every single wood grain is calculated and combined with absolute rigor. The artistic mimesis, which draws out an intentional difference from the essence of the object, leads viewers to realize they have been deceived the moment they stand before the screen. This experience is far from a mere failure of optical illusion; rather, it serves as a catalyst for awakening to the habitual structures through which we perceive the world.
Ultimately, Constructed Illusion is an attempt to translate the 'uncertainty of seeing' into a pictorial language. The moment the visual order falters and space collapses, viewers are prompted to question themselves on how they have seen and believed in the world. This solo exhibition will serve as an awakening forum for the gaze, offering a firsthand opportunity at BONGALLERY to witness the true essence of Kim Namyong's paintings, which bridge the gap between thought and sensation.
