순환 : The Eternal Cycle

본화랑은 9월 10일(금)부터 10월 20일(수)까지 윤위동 작가의 개인전 '순환 : The Eternal Cycle'을 개최한다. 이번 전시에서는 모래와 돌을 통해 자연의 생성과 소멸의 순환적 에너지를 표현한 윤위동 작가의 회화, 드로잉 등 다양한 작품들을 선보일 예정이다. 

극사실주의 회화는 정교한 표현을 통해 실재하는 현실을 완벽하게 묘사하는 기법을 특징으로 한다. 윤위동은 한국의 극사실주의 회화의 계보를 잇는 작가로 초창기에는 시필로 그린 정교한 인물화 작업을 선보여 화단의 주목을 받았다. 그 후 작업들은 모래, 돌, 보석 등의 자연물을 대상으로 하는 정물화로 전환되며 작품의 내용과 표현 방식에 많은 변화를 거쳐왔다. 윤위동 작가의 특징은 우월한 묘사력이라 할 수 있다. 현존하는 자연물의 사실감을 극대화하여 실물을 능가하는 모습을 표현해낸다. 그는 돌의 미세한 결과 질감의 표현 뿐만 아니라 돌이 머금은 수분, 모래 위 물의 번짐, 매끈한 돌의 표면에 반사된 빛 등 육안으로 관찰하기 어려운 디테일까지 정교하게 묘사한다. 더 나아가 사물의 실재감을 증폭시키기 위해 실제 돌과 모래를 이용한 다양한 매체 실험과 방법론을 연구해오고 있다. 캔버스 위에 실제 모래를 깔고 그 위에 채색하거나 모래와 돌을 접착물과 섞어 굳히는 작업을 하기도 하며 레진, 거울, 유리 등의 재료를 회화와 결합시키는 시도 등을 해왔다. 윤위동 작가 특유의 돌과 모래의 정교한 표현은 단순한 재현을 넘어 사물의 본질과 진실성을 느끼게 하는 극단적 미학이라고 볼 수 있다.

윤위동의 예술은 돌과 모래가 자연의 이치를 상징한다는 것으로부터 시작된다. 세상의 모든 물질을 끊임없이 쪼개면 원자에 도달하게 되고, 그 원자들은 다시 상호작용을 통해 에너지를 만들고 우주를 이룬다. 윤위동은 작은 모래알 하나에 거대한 우주의 질서가 담겨있음을 본다. 그는 모래가 뭉쳐져 단단한 돌이 되고 그것이 다시 부서져 모래로 회귀하는 순환 과정을 묵직한 깊이감을 통해 화폭에 담아낸다. 이러한 자연의 섭리에 대한 작가의 회화적 표현이 독특한데, 돌이 모래 위를 미끄러져 지나가는 듯이 묘사하여 정지상태가 아닌 동적인 운동감을 부여한다. 이는 생성과 소멸이라는 영원한 순환성을 입체적으로 시각화하며 사라지고 다시 탄생하는 동양 철학적인 윤회적 관념을 드러낸다.

'모놀로그' 시리즈의 돌들은 저마다의 존재감을 내보인다. 독백이라는 의미의 모놀로그는 드라마와 연그긔 문학적 장치로써 주인공의 내면 심리나 철학적 고백을 집약적으로 드러낼 때 사용되는데, 이를 통해 관객들은 주인공의 사유의 세계를 공유하며 감정이입 하게 된다. 윤위동 작가는 이러한 연극적인 장치를 접목하여 회화의 독백의 어조를 담는다. 캔버스라는 무대 위에 놓인 돌은 빛과 그림자에 의해 조명을 받은 듯이 연출되어 존재감을 강렬하게 집중시킨다. 작가가 만들어낸 극적 공간에서 관객들은 돌과 고요한 교감을 나누고 각기 다른 돌의 일생을 들여다본다. 작품 속 돌들은 각각 다른 질감과 색을 가지고 있으며, 이는 저마다의 역사와 견뎌온 세월을 짐작하게 한다. 풍파를 겪은 거친 암석, 강물에 부서진 작은 조약돌, 파도에 떠밀려온 매끈한 돌의 모습에서 바다와 산으로부터 흘러내려온 오래된 이야기가 전해지는 듯 하다. 작가의 붓끝으로 풀어낸 돌의 독백은 관객으로 하여금 자아의 내면을 들여다보게 하며 자연과 삶에 대한 진지한 성찰을 이끈다. 

돌은 강인하다. 거친 풍파와 온갖 시련 가운데서도 꿋꿋이 인내하며, 인간이 존재해온 시간보다 오랜 세월을 견뎌왔다. 작가는 인고의 시간을 견딘 돌의 모습에서 방황하고 헤매던 자신을 바라본다. 외풍이나 시류에 흔들림 없이 제자리를 지켜온 돌에서 자신의 인생과 예술이 걸어갈 길을 발견한 윤위동은 수행자와 같은 마음으로 오늘도 묵묵히 돌을 그린다. 가을의 시작과 함께 윤위동 작가의 손끝에서 탄생한 돌과 모래 작품을 통해 진한 여운과 감동을 느껴보길 바란다.

Weedong Yoon's hyperrealistic paintings are characterized by precise expressions that perfectly depict existing reality. As a prominent figure in the lineage of Korean hyperrealistic painting, Weedong gained recognition for his early works that featured meticulously painted portraits using oil paint. Later in his career, he shifted towards still life paintings, focusing on natural elements such as sand, stones, and gemstones, bringing significant changes in both content and expression in his artworks. Weedong Yoon's notable feature lies in his superior descriptive ability, maximizing the realism of existing natural elements, surpassing the appearance of the actual objects. He meticulously portrays not only the fine textural details of stones but also subtle elements such as the moisture within the stones, the diffusion of water on sand, and the reflection of light on smooth stone surfaces, which are difficult to observe with the naked eye. Furthermore, in order to enhance the sense of realism of the objects, he has conducted various experiments and methodologies using actual stones and sand. These include laying actual sand on the canvas and applying color on top, or mixing sand and stones with adhesive to solidify the work. He has also experimented with combining materials such as resin, mirrors, and glass with painting.

Weedong Yoon's art originates from the symbolism that stones and sand represent the essence of nature. By continually breaking down all substances in the world, one reaches the atomic level, and these atoms, through interactions, generate energy and form the universe. Weedong sees in each small grain of sand the vast order of the universe. He encapsulates the profound cyclical process where sand conglomerates into solid rocks, only to break down again into sand, reflecting this cosmic order with a robust depth. The artist's unique expression of the natural order involves portraying the stones as if they are sliding over the sand, creating a dynamic sense of movement rather than a static state. This three-dimensional visualization of the eternal cycle of creation and destruction vividly reveals the Eastern philosophical concept of reincarnation.

The "Monologue" series of stones each exude a distinct presence. Derived from the meaning of a soliloquy, "monologue" is a dramatic and literary device used to intensely reveal a character's inner thoughts or philosophical confessions. Weedong Yoon incorporates this theatrical device to convey a monologue tone in his paintings. The stones, placed on the canvas stage, are dramatically highlighted by light and shadow, intensifying their presence. Within the dramatic space created by the artist, viewers engage in silent communication with the stones, observing the life story of each unique stone. The stones in the artwork possess different textures and colors, suggesting varied histories and the passage of time. The rugged rocks that have endured storms, small pebbles worn down by river currents, and smooth stones washed ashore by waves all seem to convey ancient stories from the sea and mountains. The monologue of the stones, brought to life by the artist's brush, encourages introspection into one's inner self and prompts serious contemplation on nature and life.

Stones are resilient. They endure relentless storms and trials with unwavering patience, having withstood the test of time for much longer than human existence. Weedong Yoon gazes at the resolute stones, reflecting on his own wandering and searching. Through the unyielding stones that have stood firm against external forces and currents, he discovers a path for his life and art. With a practitioner's dedication, Weedong Yoon continues to paint stones silently, like a monk.
